What is Natural Light?
Natural light is a form of illumination generated by natural sources such as the Sun, Moon, stars, fire, and various other natural phenomena. It exists and travels through the environment without requiring human intervention.
Today, the Sun is the largest natural light source on Earth, emitting a wide range of wavelengths, including the visible light spectrum — the colors that form a rainbow. Sunlight travels through space and interacts with particles in the atmosphere. This process creates reflection, diffusion, and scattering, allowing natural light to spread and illuminate different areas of the environment.
Why is Natural Light Important?
Natural light is not only an essential energy source for life but also plays an important role in regulating biological rhythms, shaping living environments, and supporting biodiversity. On Earth, light contributes to our perception of space and time while helping humans and other living organisms determine their surroundings and orientation.
In architecture, natural light is considered a valuable “material” that brings practical benefits to both the aesthetic quality of spaces and human well-being. It enhances the atmosphere of a home, creates emotional experiences, and contributes to a healthier living environment.
Benefits of Natural Light in Architecture
Natural light has the ability to enhance the beauty of buildings and architectural spaces. Proper lighting strategies highlight architectural forms, lines, and textures while creating spaces with greater depth and emotional richness.
Under natural lighting conditions, colors are also perceived more accurately compared to artificial environments. This allows people to make more precise decisions when selecting and combining colors, materials, and interior elements.
Natural light changes throughout the hours of the day, days, and seasons, creating diverse and ever-changing atmospheres. Daylight brings a sense of openness, brightness, and spaciousness to interior spaces. This is because natural light is not only dynamic and full of vitality but also helps reduce humidity, prevent mold growth, and improve indoor air quality, creating a fresher and healthier living environment.
“Natural light has a positive impact on human health and work performance,” a finding demonstrated by the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The research confirms that natural light helps improve mood, enhance alertness and concentration, while also playing an important role in regulating the human circadian rhythm.
Sunlight stimulates the natural production of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and the immune system. Exposure to natural light also helps regulate melatonin and cortisol — two hormones that play an important role in the sleep-wake cycle. With sufficient exposure to natural light during the day, the human body can maintain a stable circadian rhythm, supporting better sleep at night and greater alertness during the day.
Despite its significant benefits, the use of natural light in architecture also presents several challenges. The first concern is the potential increase in indoor temperatures, especially in spaces with large glass surfaces exposed to direct sunlight, which may lead to a greenhouse effect. The second challenge is the difficulty in controlling light intensity, as natural lighting is highly dependent on weather conditions and the day-night cycle.
In deeper interior spaces, natural light may not be able to reach areas far from windows, resulting in darker zones. Conversely, excessive exposure to daylight can cause glare, visual discomfort, and unwanted light disturbances for occupants.
